Kuaka Cottage. Come and enjoy our cozy handcrafted stone cottage nestled against Kahurangi National Park. No telephone, no internet, no EFTpos, no TV, just an eco friendly stay surrounded by native bush and birdsong. Relax around the campfire in the evening and gaze at a star studded sky from the wood fired bush bath as you soak your tired muscles. Flax weaving workshop for craft enthusiasts.

Highly recommended! Mark and Hanne are very welcoming hosts. The cottage is comfortable, there is no electricity in the cottage but lots of candles plus a solar powered light and a bed that is not sagging. The compost toilets are an experience as they do not smell!! Mark and Hanne may have proved that a simpler life can be a happier life and this might rubb off on you. Best coBack Rd is great for bikes as there is hardly any traffic around and Karemea is not too far away. Value for money.

An opportunity to get an "under the skin" experience with NZ. Beautiful lokal materials, organic garden, breathtaking nature. And the hostes may teach you to use flax.

Travellers looking for Karamea bed and breakfast: I can recommand Kuaka Cottage. Kuaka cottage is very cosy, with surprising features such as outdoor hot bath under the stars.

We stayed here for 2 nights in December 2010 and were delighted by everything about the accommodation, food, flax weaving course and of course the lovely hosts Mark & Hanne. Loads of birdlife next to the national park and lots of nice walks and caves, both locally and a short drive away.
The only drawback for some may be the location if you do not have your own transport but then this can apply to quite a few NZ accommodations. The eco toilet & shower has been made to an excellent standard, with attention to detail. It is a short walk from the bungalow. The tariff is now $80 and we would still view that as an absolute bargain. We wish that we could have spent several more days.
