READ OUR PRESS RELEASE
Is it still possible to save the planet and have adventurous fun?
This book says it is, and sets out real and affordable options for travelling and adventuring in New Zealand in ways that minimise environmental impact and sustain local economies.
Inspiring green travel, photographer Leonie Johnsen and architect husband Dr. Tony Ward have launched the 2nd edition of their eco-tourism travel guide Organic Explorer. Much more than just a guidebook, the second edition has blossomed to include inspirational ideas and useful advice on being eco-friendly in New Zealand. Organic Explorer is the only comprehensive green guide to NZ, the must-read eco-friendly traveller’s companion on where to eat, stay, explore and adventure.
Organic Explorer is practical and informative, promoting eco-friendly travel while supporting eco-environmental values and authentic projects in sustainability. Both international visitors and New Zealanders will find the guide valuable to discovering or rediscovering the country, whilst also preserving our unique environment and culture.
The guidebook includes details on farmers’ markets, organic food outlets and restaurants, sustainable (and affordable) accommodation from mud-brick and straw bale B&Bs to up-market eco-lodges. It also has information on New Zealand’s Great Walks and Parks. A donation from each book goes to Te Araroa Trail – New Zealand’s walkway. The book also has a comprehensive section on Cultural Tourism, with a Maori glossary, a detailed reference on marae protocol and rituals and an explanation of the Treaty of Waitangi.
Businesses profiled in Organic Explorer are forging the way in sustainable tourism and retailing, involved in conservation projects and restoring natural habitats. Also included are indigenous tourism operators who focus on offering authentic and interactive experiences, where the issues of kaitiakitanga (environmental guardianship) and manaakitanga (hospitality) are not just explained but also manifest. Organic Explorer supports preservation of our traditions, whilst revolutionising our relationship with the environment.
Organic Explorer’s second edition includes detailed travel and lifestyle advice from some of New Zealand’s eco-conscious elite, including award-winning author Leslie Kenton, renowned Maori chef, Charles Royal and celebrated ecologist Geoff Park and well-known kiwi journalist, environmental activist Geoff Chapple, and many others. Katherine Findlay, associate editor of Mana magazine has described Organic Explorer as “a real taonga, a treasure”.
“The creative and forward-thinking business people, tourism operators and artisans who inspired us to create Organic Explorer, and who are now listed in its pages, are changing the face of the tourism industry of New Zealand” says Leonie Johnsen. “Tourism is our largest industry and must become more sustainable if it is to survive. We believe this is one way we can help.”
