The Tree House: stay in your own private cabin or share accommodation with a group of family or friends in a tranquil peaceful setting beside Hokianga Harbour. Conveniently located close to the Hokianga Harbour ferry and Northland's premier touring route The Twin Coast Discovery Highway on route to Waipoua Kauri Forest from Cape Reinga and Bay of Islands.

Thirty years ago the Evans family moved from Sydney, Australia to Kohukohu, New Zealand to establish a tree and garden landscape, based on permaculture principles, on 6 hectares of farmland beside Hokianga Harbour. The wooden homestead and cabins that Phil and Pauline created are now nestled in to a lush and diverse  landscape of trees, subtropical gardens, native forest. woodland, wetlands and birds that is enjoyed by independent travellers and bicycle tourists from New Zealand and around the world.

While at The Tree House, you can choose to relax on the deck of your own cabin or share the outdoor and indoor living spaces of the main wooden homestead.

Kitchen, shower, toilets and laundry are shared by all guests, a maximum of 15 to 20 people. All buildings and facilities and car park are connected by natural gravel paths, wooden stairs ,verandahs and decks.

Enquiries from  travellers and small groups are welcome. The hilltop cabin is ideal for a group of up to  4-6 people and the Pond and Brook Cabins for couples or singles looking for a tranquil and peaceful retreat. The dorm rooms are convenient for overnight stays.

After 30 years of forest regeneration and land restoration, the Evans now have a nature trail on their property that winds through a diverse range of coastal forest plant species and native and endemic birds.

Only a few kms from The Tree House are the heritage precincts of Kohukohu and Rawene. These towns grew from the earliest days of New Zealand's settler history that began with early pakeha and maori relationships and exploitation of the abundant stands of mature kauri. Within these precincts are examples of a range of colonial buildings and historic places dating from the 1840's, including NZ's oldest bridge and Clendon House, home of kauri trader and signatory to the Treaty of Waitangi, James Clendon.

Most of the kauri forests still remaining in New Zealand are located in the catchment of Hokianga Harbour,  so from the Tree House you can drive to a range of kauri forests, including NZ's tallest and biggest kauri trees in Waipoua forest. On these day trips to kauri forests, you can also visit heritage and maori and european cultural sites, art galleries, local cafes and west coast beaches and boulder sites. Also there are night tours in Puketi forest or a maori cultural "Sandtrails" Beach Buggy tour at Mitimiti Beach.

If you are planning to take day trips around Hokianga Harbour, It is a good idea to buy a $30 5 trip car ticket when you first travel on the car ferry, this will allow you take up to 5 trips on the car ferry for the  car and driver.

For those requiring self-contained accommodation a harbourside holiday house is available in the village of Kohukohu, 5 kms from The Tree House. The holiday house is called "Kohukohu Cottage".
