The Hurunui High Country Track surrounded by the uncrowded wilderness of a high country station with its stunning views and plentiful wildlife, provides an incomparable New Zealand walking experience. The track covers 30km over three nights, passing through a wide range of vegetation and landscapes including farmland, beech forest, and sub-alpine terrain. Each night’s accommodation is unique and complements the beauty of the surrounding wilderness. The first night’s accommodation is at the Cook House which is the old shearer’s quarters for the station built in 1914. It has been converted to provide rooms with two single beds in each. It has a fully equipped kitchen with an oven, fridge, barbecue, hot showers and flush loos. The second night’s accommodation is at the Valley Camp hut. A large open plan hut with a fully equipped kitchen, gas-cooking facilities, barbecue, hot shower, flush loo, comfy beds and a small gas fridge for perishables. The third night’s accommodation is at the Bush Hut (built in 1932) which has all the characteristics of early pioneering times with a few modern facilities such as gas cookers, barbecue, small gas fridge and a hot shower. It has bunks, semi-permanent tents and views of the mountains.

This is over rolling Farm land. The tracks are generally in good order November 2012. I'd recommend you pay for pack cartage, makes the whole trip much more enjoyable. You're paying for the privilege to walk on private land but you are made to feel welcome. It's worth the effort to be out in the bush without the crowds. You can enjoy the day with a hot shower at the end of the day, luxury!!
