The Kaikoura Coast Track starts and finishes at Ngaroma, which is about 2 hours drive north of Christchurch, and about ¾ of an hour drive south of Kaikoura.

First Night — The Loft, Ngaroma: You can relax around the barbecue under the walnut tree, or just sit back in the Loft and enjoy a glass of wine as you watch the sun setting on the Kaikoura mountains rising high above the Pacific Ocean.
Hosts: Heather and Bruce Macfarlane.

First Day: Four to six hours walking (approx. 13 km), including two hours along the beach past cliffs embedded with 8000 year old tree stumps and fossils. You may see seals or dolphins at play in the surf. Lunch at the Circle Shelter amongst coastal bush. Walk across open farmland and through the conservation area of regenerating bush to the Medina homestead.

Second Night — The Whare, Medina: Nestled in a secluded corner of the home paddock, offering insight into the busy farm life on a remote backcountry sheep farm.
Hosts: Sally, David, Peter and Megan Handyside.

Second Day: Four to five hours walking (approx. 13 km). Up through Medina into the Hawkswood Range to Mount Wilson. From here you can look south to Banks Peninsula, or west to the Southern Alps in the distance and The Staging Post far below. Lunch at Mt Wilson Hut before heading down to the Staging Post.

Third Night — The Staging Post, Hawkswood: Enjoy the historic sheep station setting with Ash House accommodation amongst other character cabins, vintage machinery & horsedrawn vehicles, swimming pool & BBQ facilities. Upgrade option to private room in Cabbage Tree Cottage B&B at $95 per couple extra (includes breakfast) or $60 per couple extra (excludes breakfast).
Hosts: Linda Garrett and Mike Macfarlane.

Third Day: Four to six hours walking (approx. 13km) after a short 10 minute van ride to the start of the track. Cross forestry slopes to Buntings Bush stream, and follow the bush-filled valley to the top of the Hawkswood Range. Views of the Seaward Kaikoura Mountains and the ocean are immense. After lunch in the shelter of the Skull Peak day hut, it’s down off the tussocks through bush and rolling farmland back to finish at Ngaroma.
