Kia ora and welcome to Te Urewera Treks We offer a range of unique 1 to 4-day wilderness walks for people looking for a truly special trekking experience. Our treks venture into the remote forests of Te Urewera and Whirinaki which are home to some of New Zealand’s most magnificent indigenous rainforest as well as the beautiful Lake Waikaremoana. The region is also rich in native birdlife like kereru, tui, and kaka. As part of the trekking experiences, our local Maori guides share their knowledge of the plants and wildlife of the area, the fascinating histories of this remote place, as well as food and medicinal uses for native plants.
Our one-day Whirinaki Loop Trek operates daily on demand throughout the year. This trek involves 4-5 hours of relatively easy walking on a well formed trail in the Whirinaki Forest. The trek includes pick up in Rotorua at about 8.30am (from the Visitor Centre or most accommodation places), snacks and lunch, and an optional hot pool dip on the way back to Rotorua, arriving back at about 5.30–6.30pm. Advance bookings are essential.
Our 3-day experience includes the Whirinaki Loop trek, an overnight stay at our own, private, fully equipped bush camp and 2 additional days trekking around Lake Waikaremoana, overnighting in a Department of Conservation hut, and a short boat excursion on Lake Waikaremoana before journeying back by road to Rotorua. This trek involves 4-5 hours walking each day with a mix of easy to moderate walking conditions requiring a moderate level of fitness. All meals, snacks, accommodation and transport are provided for this experience.
Our 4-day Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk heads to the beautiful and remote Lake Waikaremoana, surrounded by mountains clothed in dense, temperate rainforest dating back to the Jurassic period. Te Urewera Treks takes you on a 4-day journey through this ancient and pristine landscape, on one of New Zealand’s Great Walks. Our local Maori guides bring the forest alive, sharing tribal stories, histories and culture with you on the trail, or whilst relaxing around the camp fire, enjoying the view with a delicious BBQ meal and a glass of superb New Zealand wine. All meals, snacks, accommodation and transport are provided for this experience.
