Lake Tarawera is a beautiful fresh water lake 25 mins from the centre of Rotorua. Beautiful, native forest surrounds this pristine lake with Mt Tarawera, an extinct volcano, providing a dramatic backdrop
The Fat Pigeon ecostay is a three bedroom self contained flat on the ground floor of our house. We live upstairs. The cost is $40 pp per night..There are two double rooms & the third room has 3 single beds. Also can be rented as the whole three bedroomed flat for a family or group of friends. Special rates for this depending on high or low season.
The Fat Pigeon has its own kitchen, bathroom, toilet, lounge & dining area. It also has a BBQ & outdoor eating area.
There is wireless internet, TV & selection of DVDs. There are kayaks & bikes to use free of charge. You can fish for trout in the lake & are welcome to use our rod. You will need to get a fishing licence.
Use our fresh herbs straight from our garden. We have a solar oven that you are welcome to use.
There are no shops in this area, so you will need to bring all your own food & beverages including breakfast food, tea and coffee.
At times, we will be away, but this can be an independent holiday experience with the key in a coded key box etc.
We use grid connected solar power for our electricity. The first place at Lake Tarawera to do this. There is no public transport from Rotorua to Lake Tarawera. You will need your own car to get here or we can collect you from Rotorua. We do come & go from Rotorua frequently, but if we need to make a special trip it will cost $15.
We have a covered luxury pontoon boat that we use to explore the lake & guests particularly enjoy the trip to hotwater beach & a secluded hot pool only accessible by boat or a 3 to 4 hr wolk. We give a big discount to guests; $50 pp for a 2 1/2hr trip. Need at least 2 people or a $100 minimum. We can also take you rock jumping & swimming from the boat for a small fee eg $10.Around this area you can swim, fish or hike. Bikes & kayaks for guests to use.
Awake to bird song. This is a renowned area for native birds. The fat pigeons are the big, native pigeons which are becoming threatened in N.Z. However Lake Tarawera has an abundance of them.
The Fat Pigeon is a great base to explore the lakes & Rotorua.
