The idea for Waimarama Maori Tours started with the desire to protect Hakikino, the historical birth place of our tribe. We created the 62 hectare Hakikino Conservation Reserve on our land to safeguard in perpetuity the place the remnants of the 14th century Māori fortress stood. We have a native plant nursery and have propogated and planted more than 50,000 natives on the reserve.
In this way we can conserve and protect the area, provide meaningful employment for the local community and provide the necessary training for our people to be able to participate in tourism and other businesses.
