Magic Cottage is the ultimate romantic retreat with super-king bed and luxurious alfresco claw foot bath overlooking the river. River & Garden Cottages are spacious and contemporary with 2 double en suite bedrooms, a spacious hall, open plan living, dining and fully equipped kitchen. A beautiful alfresco claw foot bath on the Summer House deck provides River & Garden Cottage guests with the perfect place to relax. Guests enjoy luxurious beds, feather duvets, cotton linen, towels and bathrobes, fresh flowers, books and magazines. Peace, seclusion and tranquillity surround the cottages; a beautiful river frontage, organic farmland, sub-tropical gardens, summer house, swimming hole, jetty, boat house, kayaks and access to the beautiful deserted Takou Bay beach. Environmentally Friendly Aspects of the AccommodationMagic Cottage & Takou River Lodge are set amid 5 acres of sub-tropical gardens on the banks of the Takou River. The gardens feature a beautiful array of native and exotic plants and are surrounded by our 150 acre organically certified (OFNZ/FNOG) farmland which we are actively managing to encourage New Zealand flora and fauna. To enhance the biodiversity of the area we have an extensive native tree planting programme, with over 6000 trees planted to date, and plans for further wetland habitat enhancement. We also have a native tree seedling propagation scheme in our Shade House and offer guests guided tours around the plantings, shade house and farm. We are surrounded by Kiwi Zones and operate a complimentary pest control programme to give our native flora and fauna the best possible chance of thriving. The abundant birdlife seen around the cottages, gardens, farm and river is a testament to these efforts.We believe that our environmental strategy and sustainable tourism practices demonstrate our commitment to preserving and enhancing our local environment whilst providing our guests with an enjoyable and memorable stay. Magic Cottage - is a secluded timber cabin perched on the banks of the Takou River, powered by a combination of Solar Panels (lighting) and Gas (heating, hot water, cooking & fridge). River & Garden Cottages - are 2 contemporary cottages featuring extensive use of reclaimed timber  Throughout the cottages we have made use of reclaimed timber, and timber sustainably milled from our property. Our sustainable environmental practices have been developed to enhance our guests' enjoyment of their stay and include: Capture and use of rainwater; energy efficient light bulbs, and non-toxic and biodegradable cleaning products (sourced from the New Zealand Company ECOSTORE and ECOVER). We provide complimentary toiletries sourced locally from the New Zealand Company "Living Nature" which specialises in making natural skin care products free from synthetic preservatives or parabens. We use local goods and services where at all possible, and support the Kerikeri Farmers Market as well as local organic producers and growers. We encourage all our guests to participate in our waste recycling programme and provide dedicated facilities for them to segregate their waste. Takou River Farm is home to our herd of Organically Certified Hereford Cattle and we supply organically reared beef. As a family we grow and eat organic food where at all possible and have a commitment to living as sustainably as possible. We have converted our vehicle to operate on LPG thereby cutting our fuel consumption and greenhouse gas and particulate emissions by more than a third. We are currently building our own house which will be completely "Grid Free" using renewable power sources specifically Photovoltaics, Solar Hot Water and Hydro. We are using Eco-friendly insulation, triple-glazed windows, extensive reclaimed and sustainably milled timber from our property, and the house will be a show-case alternative energy home. Garden Cottage - is a full Size Cottage - It has 1 x King Bedroom and 1 Queen Bedroom plus 2 en-suite bathrooms, one with bath & shower and one with shower. River & Garden Cottages share the beautiful Summer House with its own stunning alfresco claw foot bath set on the deck over looking the gardens towards the river.
