It is also the home of the Koanga Institute, that is dedicated to saving rare and endangered heirloom varieties from the northern bio-region.  As well as gardening products and hand tools (including scythes) the shop stocks hand-powered kitchen items - flour mills, grinders, juicers and sausage stuffers. There is a range of carefully selected books on organic gardening and orchards, sustainable living, earth building, eco-villages and ecology. Also on sale are two lines of NZ made shoes, McKinlays of Dunedin and Soul Shoes - hand made in Raglan. The shop sells fresh organic seasonal produce, most of it locally grown.  Koanga Gardens was started by Kay Baxter, who pioneered seed saving in this area when she realised that many of the old varieties were being lost. Though Kay has moved away, she remains as Director of the Institute and in close contact. Two of Kays books - Whats Happening In Your Garden, and Design Your Own Orchard, continue to be the best sellers at the shop.
