Environmentally friendly aspects of Awaroa Lodge
Our environmental strategy has been formed with the location around us in mind, the environment in which we are situated commands respect and requires us to be mindful of it in everything we do. It has shaped the way that we do business, we believe that we are creating an innovative business practice that is a clear example of how profitability and sustainable practice can work together hand in hand.
These two concepts are not opposing extremes of the same scale but require consideration of the both to ensure our success in the way that we measure it. It requires taking a multiple bottom line approach to the Lodge, our turnover or profit not being our only defining feature of successful business.
Developing a culture of innovative thinking has been a concept of the dynamic management team at Awaroa since its foundation in 1991 and the isolated nature of Awaroa’s unique location only served to encourage this process. The innovative waste disposal system & organic garden, along with pest control to bring native birds back, and wetland enhancement showed the lodge’s commitment to sustainable business values.
At the heart of the ‘Awaroa Journey’ has been an unrelenting desire for sustainable tourism. This has resulted in a unique approach including: design and construction of the Lodge, environmental improvement and wetland enhancement, developing low-impact waste management systems, maximising recycling, buying eco-friendly products, introducing eco-friendly business practices backed by staff policies, and fostering a culture of innovation.

The organic garden (BIOGRO accredited) also has a major influence on the Lodge menu which provides high-value, healthy, creative cuisine for which the Lodge is developing a national and international reputation.
Awaroa Lodge is a contributor to the Nelson-Tasman Sustainable Tourism Charter. The Nelson-Tasman Sustainable Tourism Charter is a regionally defined vision of what sustainable tourism means for local tourism businesses. The key themes of the charter incorporate environmental, social, cultural and economic factors of sustainability.
The charter process sets out to help members protect and enhance the natural environment for future generations by identifying environmental impacts associated with business operations. Steps are then identified to improve the land, air, and water quality as well as the biodiversity in our region.
The charter also works towards providing benefits for staff and customers of businesses as well as the wider community, and looks at ways to help other businesses improve their sustainability.
The charter recognises that fact that at the end of the day a business must be financially viable, and helps identify simple, practical and achievable actions to improve sustainability and deliver long-term financial savings.

In 2002 Awaroa Lodge began working with the Green Globe programme, 2004 saw us achieve benchmark status with this internationally recognised point of reference.
